OpenAI’s 1GW Data Center Planned for Saline Township Near Ann Arbor Saline Township, MI, In a quiet patch of Washtenaw County farmland just outside Ann Arbor, something big is on the horizon. Not another corn harvest, but a massive high-tech data center that promises to put Michigan at the forefront of the AI revolution. OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, is partnering with software giant Oracle and developer Related Companies’ digital arm to transform 250 acres of rural Saline Township into a 1-gigawatt “hyperscale” computing campus nicknamed “The Barn”. Locals who have driven along Michigan Avenue past the iconic red barn on the property may soon see it standing at the gateway to one of the country’s most advanced artificial intelligence facilities instead of endless rows of crops. The project’s sheer scale and the unlikely setting have families and longtime Michiganders buzzing with a mix of excitement and curiosity. | Mary Sheffield Elected Detroit Mayor 2025: First Woman to Lead City The Detroit City Council President and lifelong Detroiter won in a landslide, capturing about 77% of the vote to opponent Solomon Kinloch Jr.’s 23%. With 100% of precincts reporting, Sheffield earned 88,229 votes to Kinloch’s 25,725, a margin so wide that she noted it may be the largest in Detroit’s history. The Associated Press called the race for Sheffield just over an hour after polls closed, underscoring the decisive nature of her victory. At a jubilant election night party at MGM Grand Detroit, hundreds of supporters cheered and chanted “Mary! Mary!” as the 38-year-old mayor-elect took the stage to claim victory. In a city 324 years old that has seen 75 male mayors before her, Sheffield proudly proclaimed to the crowd, “Tonight, our city adds another chapter to its great history… Not one [mayor] has been a woman. But tonight, Detroit, we know that changes. And you changed it, Detroit!”. |
