The Best $25 You Can Spend in Metro Detroit
The Detroit Zoo isn’t just Michigan’s largest paid family attraction — it’s one of the best ways to spend a day in Metro Detroit. Located in Royal Oak, the Zoo welcomes over a million visitors every year and for good reason.
From more than 2,000 animals across 237 species, to family favorites like the Polk Penguin Conservation Center and the Arctic Ring of Life (both are out of this world cool), there’s something here for everyone. A few other highlights worth checking out:
Tauber Train — ride it to the back of the park and work your way forward to beat the crowds.
Table 28 — a locally sourced dining spot that makes for a great mid-day recharge.
Carousel & Rackham Fountain — a solar-powered carousel, and one of the Zoo’s most photographed landmarks.
Buddy’s Pizza — grab a slice before heading home, because nothing caps off a day at the Zoo like Detroit-style pizza.
Wild Lights (November–December) — over five million LED lights turning the Zoo into a holiday wonderland.
What really makes the Detroit Zoo unique? Its commitment to rescue and rehabilitation. The Zoo is often called to help animals from the exotic pet trade, roadside circuses, and other unsafe conditions, giving them a permanent home.

P.S. About that mask line… vintage 2021. The video’s too good not to share. You’re fine without one unless you’d prefer to wear it.
